Chapter 15

Then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him.

Si avvicinavano a lui tutti i pubblicani e i peccatori per ascoltarlo.

And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.

I farisei e gli scribi mormoravano: «Costui riceve i peccatori e mangia con loro».

And he spake this parable unto them, saying,

Allora egli disse loro questa parabola:

What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?

«Chi di voi se ha cento pecore e ne perde una, non lascia le novantanove nel deserto e va dietro a quella perduta, finché non la ritrova?

And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing.

Ritrovatala, se la mette in spalla tutto contento,

And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost.

va a casa, chiama gli amici e i vicini dicendo: Rallegratevi con me, perché ho trovato la mia pecora che era perduta.

I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.

Così, vi dico, ci sarà più gioia in cielo per un peccatore convertito, che per novantanove giusti che non hanno bisogno di conversione.

Either what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, doth not light a candle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she find it?

O quale donna, se ha dieci dramme e ne perde una, non accende la lucerna e spazza la casa e cerca attentamente finché non la ritrova?

And when she hath found it, she calleth her friends and her neighbours together, saying, Rejoice with me; for I have found the piece which I had lost.

E dopo averla trovata, chiama le amiche e le vicine, dicendo: Rallegratevi con me, perché ho ritrovato la dramma che avevo perduta.

Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.

Così, vi dico, c'è gioia davanti agli angeli di Dio per un solo peccatore che si converte».

And he said, A certain man had two sons:

Disse ancora: «Un uomo aveva due figli.

And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living.

Il più giovane disse al padre: Padre, dammi la parte del patrimonio che mi spetta. E il padre divise tra loro le sostanze.

And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living.

Dopo non molti giorni, il figlio più giovane, raccolte le sue cose, partì per un paese lontano e là sperperò le sue sostanze vivendo da dissoluto.

And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want.

Quando ebbe speso tutto, in quel paese venne una grande carestia ed egli cominciò a trovarsi nel bisogno.

And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.

Allora andò e si mise a servizio di uno degli abitanti di quella regione, che lo mandò nei campi a pascolare i porci.

And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.

Avrebbe voluto saziarsi con le carrube che mangiavano i porci; ma nessuno gliene dava.

And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!

Allora rientrò in se stesso e disse: Quanti salariati in casa di mio padre hanno pane in abbondanza e io qui muoio di fame!

I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee,

Mi leverò e andrò da mio padre e gli dirò: Padre, ho peccato contro il Cielo e contro di te;

And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.

non sono più degno di esser chiamato tuo figlio. Trattami come uno dei tuoi garzoni.

And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.

Partì e si incamminò verso suo padre. gli si gettò al collo e lo baciò.

And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.

Il figlio gli disse: Padre, ho peccato contro il Cielo e contro di te; non sono più degno di esser chiamato tuo figlio.

But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet:

Ma il padre disse ai servi: Presto, portate qui il vestito più bello e rivestitelo, mettetegli l'anello al dito e i calzari ai piedi.

And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry:

Portate il vitello grasso, ammazzatelo, mangiamo e facciamo festa,

For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.

perché questo mio figlio era morto ed è tornato in vita, era perduto ed è stato ritrovato. E cominciarono a far festa.

Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard musick and dancing.

Il figlio maggiore si trovava nei campi. Al ritorno, quando fu vicino a casa, udì la musica e le danze;

And he called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant.

chiamò un servo e gli domandò che cosa fosse tutto ciò.

And he said unto him, Thy brother is come; and thy father hath killed the fatted calf, because he hath received him safe and sound.

Il servo gli rispose: E' tornato tuo fratello e il padre ha fatto ammazzare il vitello grasso, perché lo ha riavuto sano e salvo.

And he was angry, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and intreated him.

Egli si arrabbiò, e non voleva entrare. Il padre allora uscì a pregarlo.

And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends:

Ma lui rispose a suo padre: Ecco, io ti servo da tanti anni e non ho mai trasgredito un tuo comando, e tu non mi hai dato mai un capretto per far festa con i miei amici.

But as soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf.

Ma ora che questo tuo figlio che ha divorato i tuoi averi con le prostitute è tornato, per lui hai ammazzato il vitello grasso.

And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine.

Gli rispose il padre: Figlio, tu sei sempre con me e tutto ciò che è mio è tuo;

It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.

ma bisognava far festa e rallegrarsi, perché questo tuo fratello era morto ed è tornato in vita, era perduto ed è stato ritrovato».
