Chapter 14

And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him.

Un sabato era entrato in casa di uno dei capi dei farisei per pranzare e la gente stava ad osservarlo.

And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy.

Davanti a lui stava un idropico.

And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?

Rivolgendosi ai dottori della legge e ai farisei, Gesù disse: «E' lecito o no curare di sabato?».

And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go;

Ma essi tacquero. Egli lo prese per mano, lo guarì e lo congedò.

And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day?

Poi disse: «Chi di voi, se un asino o un bue gli cade nel pozzo, non lo tirerà subito fuori in giorno di sabato?».

And they could not answer him again to these things.

E non potevano rispondere nulla a queste parole.

And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them,

Osservando poi come gli invitati sceglievano i primi posti, disse loro una parabola:

When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him;

«Quando sei invitato a nozze da qualcuno, non metterti al primo posto, perché non ci sia un altro invitato più ragguardevole di te

And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.

e colui che ha invitato te e lui venga a dirti: Cedigli il posto! Allora dovrai con vergogna occupare l'ultimo posto.

But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.

Invece quando sei invitato, và a metterti all'ultimo posto, perché venendo colui che ti ha invitato ti dica: Amico, passa più avanti. Allora ne avrai onore davanti a tutti i commensali.

For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Perché chiunque si esalta sarà umiliato, e chi si umilia sarà esaltato».

Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee.

Disse poi a colui che l'aveva invitato: «Quando offri un pranzo o una cena, non invitare i tuoi amici, né i tuoi fratelli, né i tuoi parenti, né i ricchi vicini, perché anch'essi non ti invitino a loro volta e tu abbia il contraccambio.

But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:

Al contrario, quando dai un banchetto, invita poveri, storpi, zoppi, ciechi;

And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.

e sarai beato perché non hanno da ricambiarti. Riceverai infatti la tua ricompensa alla risurrezione dei giusti».

And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.

Uno dei commensali, avendo udito ciò, gli disse: «Beato chi mangerà il pane nel regno di Dio!».

Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many:

Gesù rispose: «Un uomo diede una grande cena e fece molti inviti.

And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.

All'ora della cena, mandò il suo servo a dire agli invitati: Venite, è pronto.

And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.

Ma tutti, all'unanimità, cominciarono a scusarsi. Il primo disse: Ho comprato un campo e devo andare a vederlo; ti prego, considerami giustificato.

And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused.

Un altro disse: Ho comprato cinque paia di buoi e vado a provarli; ti prego, considerami giustificato.

And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.

Un altro disse: Ho preso moglie e perciò non posso venire.

So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind.

Al suo ritorno il servo riferì tutto questo al padrone. Allora il padrone di casa, irritato, disse al servo: Esci subito per le piazze e per le vie della città e conduci qui poveri, storpi, ciechi e zoppi.

And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.

Il servo disse: Signore, è stato fatto come hai ordinato, ma c'è ancora posto.

And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.

Il padrone allora disse al servo: Esci per le strade e lungo le siepi, spingili a entrare, perché la mia casa si riempia.

For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.

Perché vi dico: Nessuno di quegli uomini che erano stati invitati assaggerà la mia cena».

And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them,

Siccome molta gente andava con lui, egli si voltò e disse:

If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

«Se uno viene a me e non odia suo padre, sua madre, la moglie, i figli, i fratelli, le sorelle e perfino la propria vita, non può essere mio discepolo.

And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

Chi non porta la propria croce e non viene dietro di me, non può essere mio discepolo.

For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?

Chi di voi, volendo costruire una torre, non si siede prima a calcolarne la spesa, se ha i mezzi per portarla a compimento?

Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,

Per evitare che, se getta le fondamenta e non può finire il lavoro, tutti coloro che vedono comincino a deriderlo, dicendo:

Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

Costui ha iniziato a costruire, ma non è stato capace di finire il lavoro.

Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?

Oppure quale re, partendo in guerra contro un altro re, non siede prima a esaminare se può affrontare con diecimila uomini chi gli viene incontro con ventimila?

Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace.

Se no, mentre l'altro è ancora lontano, gli manda un'ambasceria per la pace.

So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

Così chiunque di voi non rinunzia a tutti i suoi averi, non può essere mio discepolo.

Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned?

Il sale è buono, ma se anche il sale perdesse il sapore, con che cosa lo si salerà?

It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

Non serve né per la terra né per il concime e così lo buttano via. Chi ha orecchi per intendere, intenda».
