Chapter 9

Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.

Egli allora chiamò a sé i Dodici e diede loro potere e autorità su tutti i demòni e di curare le malattie.

And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.

E li mandò ad annunziare il regno di Dio e a guarire gli infermi.

And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece.

Disse loro: «Non prendete nulla per il viaggio, né bastone, né bisaccia, né pane, né denaro, né due tuniche per ciascuno.

And whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide, and thence depart.

In qualunque casa entriate, là rimanete e di là poi riprendete il cammino.

And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them.

Quanto a coloro che non vi accolgono, nell'uscire dalla loro città, scuotete la polvere dai vostri piedi, a testimonianza contro di essi».

And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.

Allora essi partirono e giravano di villaggio in villaggio, annunziando dovunque la buona novella e operando guarigioni.

Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him: and he was perplexed, because that it was said of some, that John was risen from the dead;

Intanto il tetrarca Erode sentì parlare di tutti questi avvenimenti e non sapeva che cosa pensare, perché alcuni dicevano: «Giovanni è risuscitato dai morti»,

And of some, that Elias had appeared; and of others, that one of the old prophets was risen again.

altri: «E' apparso Elia», e altri ancora: «E' risorto uno degli antichi profeti».

And Herod said, John have I beheaded: but who is this, of whom I hear such things? And he desired to see him.

Ma Erode diceva: «Giovanni l'ho fatto decapitare io; chi è dunque costui, del quale sento dire tali cose?». E cercava di vederlo.

And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all that they had done. And he took them, and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida.

Al loro ritorno, gli apostoli raccontarono a Gesù tutto quello che avevano fatto. Allora li prese con sé e si ritirò verso una città chiamata Betsàida.

And the people, when they knew it, followed him: and he received them, and spake unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing.

Ma le folle lo seppero e lo seguirono. Egli le accolse e prese a parlar loro del regno di Dio e a guarire quanti avevan bisogno di cure.

And when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve, and said unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country round about, and lodge, and get victuals: for we are here in a desert place.

Il giorno cominciava a declinare e i Dodici gli si avvicinarono dicendo: «Congeda la folla, perché vada nei villaggi e nelle campagne dintorno per alloggiare e trovar cibo, poiché qui siamo in una zona deserta».

But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, We have no more but five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy meat for all this people.

Gesù disse loro: «Dategli voi stessi da mangiare». Ma essi risposero: «Non abbiamo che cinque pani e due pesci, a meno che non andiamo noi a comprare viveri per tutta questa gente».

For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company.

C'erano infatti circa cinquemila uomini. Egli disse ai discepoli: «Fateli sedere per gruppi di cinquanta».

And they did so, and made them all sit down.

Così fecero e li invitarono a sedersi tutti quanti.

Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude.

Allora egli prese i cinque pani e i due pesci e, levati gli occhi al cielo, li benedisse, li spezzò e li diede ai discepoli perché li distribuissero alla folla.

And they did eat, and were all filled: and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets.

Tutti mangiarono e si saziarono e delle parti loro avanzate furono portate via dodici ceste.

And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Whom say the people that I am?

Un giorno, mentre Gesù si trovava in un luogo appartato a pregare e i discepoli erano con lui, pose loro questa domanda: «Chi sono io secondo la gente?».

They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again.

Essi risposero: «Per alcuni Giovanni il Battista, per altri Elia, per altri uno degli antichi profeti che è risorto».

He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God.

Allora domandò: «Ma voi chi dite che io sia?». Pietro, prendendo la parola, rispose: «Il Cristo di Dio».

And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing;

Egli allora ordinò loro severamente di non riferirlo a nessuno.

Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.

«Il Figlio dell'uomo, disse, deve soffrire molto, essere riprovato dagli anziani, dai sommi sacerdoti e dagli scribi, esser messo a morte e risorgere il terzo giorno».

And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

Poi, a tutti, diceva: «Se qualcuno vuol venire dietro a me, rinneghi se stesso, prenda la sua croce ogni giorno e mi segua.

For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.

Chi vorrà salvare la propria vita, la perderà, ma chi perderà la propria vita per me, la salverà.

For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?

Che giova all'uomo guadagnare il mondo intero, se poi si perde o rovina se stesso?

For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels.

Chi si vergognerà di me e delle mie parole, di lui si vergognerà il Figlio dell'uomo, quando verrà nella gloria sua e del Padre e degli angeli santi.

But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.

In verità vi dico: vi sono alcuni qui presenti, che non morranno prima di aver visto il regno di Dio».

And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.

Circa otto giorni dopo questi discorsi, prese con sé Pietro, Giovanni e Giacomo e salì sul monte a pregare.

And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering.

E, mentre pregava, il suo volto cambiò d'aspetto e la sua veste divenne candida e sfolgorante.

And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias:

Ed ecco due uomini parlavano con lui: erano Mosè ed Elia,

Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.

apparsi nella loro gloria, e parlavano della sua dipartita che avrebbe portato a compimento a Gerusalemme.

But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.

Pietro e i suoi compagni erano oppressi dal sonno; tuttavia restarono svegli e videro la sua gloria e i due uomini che stavano con lui.

And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said.

Mentre questi si separavano da lui, Pietro disse a Gesù: «Maestro, è bello per noi stare qui. Facciamo tre tende, una per te, una per Mosè e una per Elia». Egli non sapeva quel che diceva.

While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud.

Mentre parlava così, venne una nube e li avvolse; all'entrare in quella nube, ebbero paura.

And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.

E dalla nube uscì una voce, che diceva: «Questi è il Figlio mio, l'eletto; ascoltatelo».

And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.

Appena la voce cessò, Gesù restò solo. Essi tacquero e in quei giorni non riferirono a nessuno ciò che avevano visto.

And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met him.

Il giorno seguente, quando furon discesi dal monte, una gran folla gli venne incontro.

And, behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, Master, I beseech thee, look upon my son: for he is mine only child.

A un tratto dalla folla un uomo si mise a gridare: «Maestro, ti prego di volgere lo sguardo a mio figlio, perché è l'unico che ho.

And, lo, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth again, and bruising him hardly departeth from him.

Ecco, uno spirito lo afferra e subito egli grida, lo scuote ed egli dà schiuma e solo a fatica se ne allontana lasciandolo sfinito.

And I besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not.

Ho pregato i tuoi discepoli di scacciarlo, ma non ci sono riusciti».

And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither.

Gesù rispose: «O generazione incredula e perversa, fino a quando sarò con voi e vi sopporterò? Conducimi qui tuo figlio».

And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father.

Mentre questi si avvicinava, il demonio lo gettò per terra agitandolo con convulsioni. Gesù minacciò lo spirito immondo, risanò il fanciullo e lo consegnò a suo padre.

And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples,

E tutti furono stupiti per la grandezza di Dio. discepoli:

Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.

«Mettetevi bene in mente queste parole: Il Figlio dell'uomo sta per esser consegnato in mano degli uomini».

But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying.

Ma essi non comprendevano questa frase; per loro restava così misteriosa che non ne comprendevano il senso e avevano paura a rivolgergli domande su tale argomento.

Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest.

Frattanto sorse una discussione tra loro, chi di essi fosse il più grande.

And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him,

Allora Gesù, conoscendo il pensiero del loro cuore, prese un fanciullo, se lo mise vicino e disse:

And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.

«Chi accoglie questo fanciullo nel mio nome, accoglie me; e chi accoglie me, accoglie colui che mi ha mandato. Poiché chi è il più piccolo tra tutti voi, questi è grande».

And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us.

Giovanni prese la parola dicendo: «Maestro, abbiamo visto un tale che scacciava demòni nel tuo nome e glielo abbiamo impedito, perché non è con noi tra i tuoi seguaci».

And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.

Ma Gesù gli rispose: «Non glielo impedite, perché chi non è contro di voi, è per voi».

And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem,

Mentre stavano compiendosi i giorni in cui sarebbe stato tolto dal mondo, si diresse decisamente verso Gerusalemme

And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him.

e mandò avanti dei messaggeri. Questi si incamminarono ed entrarono in un villaggio di Samaritani per fare i preparativi per lui.

And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.

Ma essi non vollero riceverlo, perché era diretto verso Gerusalemme.

And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?

Quando videro ciò, i discepoli Giacomo e Giovanni dissero: «Signore, vuoi che diciamo che scenda un fuoco dal cielo e li consumi?».

But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.

Ma Gesù si voltò e li rimproverò.

For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.

E si avviarono verso un altro villaggio.

And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.

Mentre andavano per la strada, un tale gli disse: «Ti seguirò dovunque tu vada».

And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.

Gesù gli rispose: «Le volpi hanno le loro tane e gli uccelli del cielo i loro nidi, ma il Figlio dell'uomo non ha dove posare il capo».

And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.

A un altro disse: «Seguimi». E costui rispose: «Signore, concedimi di andare a seppellire prima mio padre».

Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.

Gesù replicò: «Lascia che i morti seppelliscano i loro morti; tu và e annunzia il regno di Dio».

And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.

Un altro disse: «Ti seguirò, Signore, ma prima lascia che io mi congedi da quelli di casa».

And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

Ma Gesù gli rispose: «Nessuno che ha messo mano all'aratro e poi si volge indietro, è adatto per il regno di Dio».
