Chapter 13

Lo, mine eye hath seen all this, mine ear hath heard and understood it.

Ecco, tutto questo ha visto il mio occhio, l'ha udito il mio orecchio e l'ha compreso.

What ye know, the same do I know also: I am not inferior unto you.

Quel che sapete voi, lo so anch'io; non sono da meno di voi.

Surely I would speak to the Almighty, and I desire to reason with God.

Ma io all'Onnipotente vorrei parlare, a Dio vorrei fare rimostranze.

But ye are forgers of lies, ye are all physicians of no value.

Voi siete raffazzonatori di menzogne, siete tutti medici da nulla.

O that ye would altogether hold your peace! and it should be your wisdom.

Magari taceste del tutto! sarebbe per voi un atto di sapienza!

Hear now my reasoning, and hearken to the pleadings of my lips.

Ascoltate dunque la mia riprensione e alla difesa delle mie labbra fate attenzione.

Will ye speak wickedly for God? and talk deceitfully for him?

Volete forse in difesa di Dio dire il falso e in suo favore parlare con inganno?

Will ye accept his person? will ye contend for God?

Vorreste trattarlo con parzialità e farvi difensori di Dio?

Is it good that he should search you out? or as one man mocketh another, do ye so mock him?

Sarebbe bene per voi se egli vi scrutasse? Come s'inganna un uomo, credete di ingannarlo?

He will surely reprove you, if ye do secretly accept persons.

Severamente vi redarguirà, se in segreto gli siete parziali.

Shall not his excellency make you afraid? and his dread fall upon you?

Forse la sua maestà non vi incute spavento e il terrore di lui non vi assale?

Your remembrances are like unto ashes, your bodies to bodies of clay.

Sentenze di cenere sono i vostri moniti, difese di argilla le vostre difese.

Hold your peace, let me alone, that I may speak, and let come on me what will.

Tacete, state lontani da me: parlerò io, mi capiti quel che capiti.

Wherefore do I take my flesh in my teeth, and put my life in mine hand?

Voglio afferrare la mia carne con i denti e mettere sulle mie mani la mia vita.

Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him.

Mi uccida pure, non me ne dolgo; voglio solo difendere davanti a lui la mia condotta!

He also shall be my salvation: for an hypocrite shall not come before him.

Questo mi sarà pegno di vittoria, perché un empio non si presenterebbe davanti a lui.

Hear diligently my speech, and my declaration with your ears.

Ascoltate bene le mie parole e il mio esposto sia nei vostri orecchi.

Behold now, I have ordered my cause; I know that I shall be justified.

Ecco, tutto ho preparato per il giudizio, son convinto che sarò dichiarato innocente.

Who is he that will plead with me? for now, if I hold my tongue, I shall give up the ghost.

Chi vuol muover causa contro di me? Perché allora tacerò, pronto a morire.

Only do not two things unto me: then will I not hide myself from thee.

Solo, assicurami due cose e allora non mi sottrarrò alla tua presenza;

Withdraw thine hand far from me: and let not thy dread make me afraid.

allontana da me la tua mano e il tuo terrore più non mi spaventi;

Then call thou, and I will answer: or let me speak, and answer thou me.

poi interrogami pure e io risponderò oppure parlerò io e tu mi risponderai.

How many are mine iniquities and sins? make me to know my transgression and my sin.

Quante sono le mie colpe e i miei peccati? Fammi conoscere il mio misfatto e il mio peccato.

Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and holdest me for thine enemy?

Perché mi nascondi la tua faccia e mi consideri come un nemico?

Wilt thou break a leaf driven to and fro? and wilt thou pursue the dry stubble?

Vuoi spaventare una foglia dispersa dal vento e dar la caccia a una paglia secca?

For thou writest bitter things against me, and makest me to possess the iniquities of my youth.

Poiché scrivi contro di me sentenze amare e mi rinfacci i miei errori giovanili;

Thou puttest my feet also in the stocks, and lookest narrowly unto all my paths; thou settest a print upon the heels of my feet.

tu metti i miei piedi in ceppi, spii tutti i miei passi e ti segni le orme dei miei piedi.

And he, as a rotten thing, consumeth, as a garment that is moth eaten.

Intanto io mi disfò come legno tarlato o come un vestito corroso da tignola.
