Chapter 5

But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.

Riguardo poi ai tempi e ai momenti, fratelli, non avete bisogno che ve ne scriva;

For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.

infatti voi ben sapete che come un ladro di notte, così verrà il giorno del Signore.

For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

E quando si dirà: «Pace e sicurezza», allora d'improvviso li colpirà la rovina, come le doglie una donna incinta; e nessuno scamperà.

But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.

Ma voi, fratelli, non siete nelle tenebre, così che quel giorno possa sorprendervi come un ladro:

Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.

voi tutti infatti siete figli della luce e figli del giorno; noi non siamo della notte, né delle tenebre.

Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.

Non dormiamo dunque come gli altri, ma restiamo svegli e siamo sobri.

For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.

Quelli che dormono, infatti, dormono di notte; e quelli che si ubriacano, sono ubriachi di notte.

But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.

Noi invece, che siamo del giorno, dobbiamo essere sobri, rivestiti con la corazza della fede e della carità e avendo come elmo la speranza della salvezza.

For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,

Poiché Dio non ci ha destinati alla sua collera ma all'acquisto della salvezza per mezzo del Signor nostro Gesù Cristo,

Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.

il quale è morto per noi, perché, sia che vegliamo sia che dormiamo, viviamo insieme con lui.

Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.

Perciò confortatevi a vicenda edificandovi gli uni gli altri, come gia fate.

And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you;

Vi preghiamo poi, fratelli, di aver riguardo per quelli che faticano tra di voi, che vi sono preposti nel Signore e vi ammoniscono;

And to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. And be at peace among yourselves.

trattateli con molto rispetto e carità, a motivo del loro lavoro. Vivete in pace tra voi.

Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.

Vi esortiamo, fratelli: correggete gli indisciplinati, confortate i pusillanimi, sostenete i deboli, siate pazienti con tutti.

See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.

Guardatevi dal rendere male per male ad alcuno; ma cercate sempre il bene tra voi e con tutti.

Rejoice evermore.

State sempre lieti,

Pray without ceasing.

pregate incessantemente,

In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

in ogni cosa rendete grazie; questa è infatti la volontà di Dio in Cristo Gesù verso di voi.

Quench not the Spirit.

Non spegnete lo Spirito,

Despise not prophesyings.

non disprezzate le profezie;

Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.

esaminate ogni cosa, tenete ciò che è buono.

Abstain from all appearance of evil.

Astenetevi da ogni specie di male.

And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Il Dio della pace vi santifichi fino alla perfezione, e tutto quello che è vostro, spirito, anima e corpo, si conservi irreprensibile per la venuta del Signore nostro Gesù Cristo.

Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.

Colui che vi chiama è fedele e farà tutto questo!

Brethren, pray for us.

Fratelli, pregate anche per noi.

Greet all the brethren with an holy kiss.

Salutate tutti i fratelli con il bacio santo.

I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read unto all the holy brethren.

Vi scongiuro, per il Signore, che si legga questa lettera a tutti i fratelli.
