Chapter 9

Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars:

La Sapienza si è costruita la casa, ha intagliato le sue sette colonne.

She hath killed her beasts; she hath mingled her wine; she hath also furnished her table.

Ha ucciso gli animali, ha preparato il vino e ha imbandito la tavola.

She hath sent forth her maidens: she crieth upon the highest places of the city,

Ha mandato le sue ancelle a proclamare sui punti più alti della città:

Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,

«Chi è inesperto accorra qui!». A chi è privo di senno essa dice:

Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled.

«Venite, mangiate il mio pane, bevete il vino che io ho preparato.

Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.

Abbandonate la stoltezza e vivrete, andate diritti per la via dell'intelligenza».

He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot.

Chi corregge il beffardo se ne attira il disprezzo, chi rimprovera l'empio se ne attira l'insulto.

Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.

Non rimproverare il beffardo per non farti odiare; rimprovera il saggio ed egli ti amerà.

Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.

Dà consigli al saggio e diventerà ancora più saggio; istruisci il giusto ed egli aumenterà la dottrina.

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

Fondamento della sapienza è il timore di Dio, la scienza del Santo è intelligenza.

For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased.

Per mezzo mio si moltiplicano i tuoi giorni, ti saranno aggiunti anni di vita.

If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.

Se sei sapiente, lo sei a tuo vantaggio, se sei beffardo, tu solo ne porterai la pena.

A foolish woman is clamorous: she is simple, and knoweth nothing.

Donna irrequieta è follia, una sciocca che non sa nulla.

For she sitteth at the door of her house, on a seat in the high places of the city,

Sta seduta alla porta di casa, su un trono, in un luogo alto della città,

To call passengers who go right on their ways:

per invitare i passanti che vanno diritti per la loro strada:

Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: and as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,

«Chi è inesperto venga qua!». E a chi è privo di senno essa dice:

Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.

«Le acque furtive sono dolci, il pane preso di nascosto è gustoso».

But he knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell.

Egli non si accorge che là ci sono le ombre e che i suoi invitati se ne vanno nel profondo degli inferi.
