Chapter 3

My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:

Figlio mio, non dimenticare il mio insegnamento e il tuo cuore custodisca i miei precetti,

For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.

perché lunghi giorni e anni di vita e pace ti porteranno.

Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:

Bontà e fedeltà non ti abbandonino; lègale intorno al tuo collo, scrivile sulla tavola del tuo cuore,

So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.

e otterrai favore e buon successo agli occhi di Dio e degli uomini.

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

Confida nel Signore con tutto il cuore e non appoggiarti sulla tua intelligenza;

In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

in tutti i tuoi passi pensa a lui ed egli appianerà i tuoi sentieri.

Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.

Non credere di essere saggio, temi il Signore e stà lontano dal male.

It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.

Salute sarà per il tuo corpo e un refrigerio per le tue ossa.

Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:

Onora il Signore con i tuoi averi e con le primizie di tutti i tuoi raccolti;

So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.

i tuoi granai si riempiranno di grano e i tuoi tini traboccheranno di mosto.

My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction:

Figlio mio, non disprezzare l'istruzione del Signore e non aver a noia la sua esortazione,

For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

perché il Signore corregge chi ama, come un padre il figlio prediletto.

Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.

Beato l'uomo che ha trovato la sapienza e il mortale che ha acquistato la prudenza,

For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.

perché il suo possesso è preferibile a quello dell'argento e il suo provento a quello dell'oro.

She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.

Essa è più preziosa delle perle e neppure l'oggetto più caro la uguaglia.

Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour.

Lunghi giorni sono nella sua destra e nella sua sinistra ricchezza e onore;

Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.

le sue vie sono vie deliziose e tutti i suoi sentieri conducono al benessere.

She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.

E' un albero di vita per chi ad essa s'attiene e chi ad essa si stringe è beato.

The LORD by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens.

Il Signore ha fondato la terra con la sapienza, ha consolidato i cieli con intelligenza;

By his knowledge the depths are broken up, and the clouds drop down the dew.

dalla sua scienza sono stati aperti gli abissi e le nubi stillano rugiada.

My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion:

Figlio mio, conserva il consiglio e la riflessione, né si allontanino mai dai tuoi occhi:

So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck.

saranno vita per te e grazia per il tuo collo.

Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble.

Allora camminerai sicuro per la tua strada e il tuo piede non inciamperà.

When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.

Se ti coricherai, non avrai da temere; se ti coricherai, il tuo sonno sarà dolce.

Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh.

Non temerai per uno spavento improvviso, né per la rovina degli empi quando verrà,

For the LORD shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken.

perché il Signore sarà la tua sicurezza, preserverà il tuo piede dal laccio.

Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it.

Non negare un beneficio a chi ne ha bisogno, se è in tuo potere il farlo.

Say not unto thy neighbour, Go, and come again, and to morrow I will give; when thou hast it by thee.

Non dire al tuo prossimo: «Và, ripassa, te lo darò domani», se tu hai ciò che ti chiede.

Devise not evil against thy neighbour, seeing he dwelleth securely by thee.

Non tramare il male contro il tuo prossimo mentre egli dimora fiducioso presso di te.

Strive not with a man without cause, if he have done thee no harm.

Non litigare senza motivo con nessuno, se non ti ha fatto nulla di male.

Envy thou not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways.

Non invidiare l'uomo violento e non imitare affatto la sua condotta,

For the froward is abomination to the LORD: but his secret is with the righteous.

perché il Signore ha in abominio il malvagio, mentre la sua amicizia è per i giusti.

The curse of the LORD is in the house of the wicked: but he blesseth the habitation of the just.

La maledizione del Signore è sulla casa del malvagio, mentre egli benedice la dimora dei giusti.

Surely he scorneth the scorners: but he giveth grace unto the lowly.

Dei beffardi egli si fa beffe e agli umili concede la grazia.

The wise shall inherit glory: but shame shall be the promotion of fools.

I saggi possiederanno onore ma gli stolti riceveranno ignominia.
