Chapter 9

Then Job answered and said,

Giobbe rispose dicendo:

I know it is so of a truth: but how should man be just with God?

In verità io so che è così: e come può un uomo aver ragione innanzi a Dio?

If he will contend with him, he cannot answer him one of a thousand.

Se uno volesse disputare con lui, non gli risponderebbe una volta su mille.

He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who hath hardened himself against him, and hath prospered?

Saggio di mente, potente per la forza, chi s'è opposto a lui ed è rimasto salvo?

Which removeth the mountains, and they know not: which overturneth them in his anger.

Sposta le montagne e non lo sanno, egli nella sua ira le sconvolge.

Which shaketh the earth out of her place, and the pillars thereof tremble.

Scuote la terra dal suo posto e le sue colonne tremano.

Which commandeth the sun, and it riseth not; and sealeth up the stars.

Comanda al sole ed esso non sorge e alle stelle pone il suo sigillo.

Which alone spreadeth out the heavens, and treadeth upon the waves of the sea.

Egli da solo stende i cieli e cammina sulle onde del mare.

Which maketh Arcturus, Orion, and Pleiades, and the chambers of the south.

Crea l'Orsa e l'Orione, le Pleiadi e i penetrali del cielo australe.

Which doeth great things past finding out; yea, and wonders without number.

Fa cose tanto grandi da non potersi indagare, meraviglie da non potersi contare.

Lo, he goeth by me, and I see him not: he passeth on also, but I perceive him not.

Ecco, mi passa vicino e non lo vedo, se ne va e di lui non m'accorgo.

Behold, he taketh away, who can hinder him? who will say unto him, What doest thou?

Se rapisce qualcosa, chi lo può impedire? Chi gli può dire: «Che fai?».

If God will not withdraw his anger, the proud helpers do stoop under him.

Dio non ritira la sua collera: sotto di lui sono fiaccati i sostenitori di Raab.

How much less shall I answer him, and choose out my words to reason with him?

Tanto meno io potrei rispondergli, trovare parole da dirgli!

Whom, though I were righteous, yet would I not answer, but I would make supplication to my judge.

Se avessi anche ragione, non risponderei, al mio giudice dovrei domandare pietà.

If I had called, and he had answered me; yet would I not believe that he had hearkened unto my voice.

Se io lo invocassi e mi rispondesse, non crederei che voglia ascoltare la mia voce.

For he breaketh me with a tempest, and multiplieth my wounds without cause.

Egli con una tempesta mi schiaccia, moltiplica le mie piaghe senza ragione,

He will not suffer me to take my breath, but filleth me with bitterness.

non mi lascia riprendere il fiato, anzi mi sazia di amarezze.

If I speak of strength, lo, he is strong: and if of judgment, who shall set me a time to plead?

Se si tratta di forza, è lui che dà il vigore; se di giustizia, chi potrà citarlo?

If I justify myself, mine own mouth shall condemn me: if I say, I am perfect, it shall also prove me perverse.

Se avessi ragione, il mio parlare mi condannerebbe; se fossi innocente, egli proverebbe che io sono reo.

Though I were perfect, yet would I not know my soul: I would despise my life.

Sono innocente? Non lo so neppure io, detesto la mia vita!

This is one thing, therefore I said it, He destroyeth the perfect and the wicked.

Per questo io dico: «E' la stessa cosa»: egli fa perire l'innocente e il reo!

If the scourge slay suddenly, he will laugh at the trial of the innocent.

Se un flagello uccide all'improvviso, della sciagura degli innocenti egli ride.

The earth is given into the hand of the wicked: he covereth the faces of the judges thereof; if not, where, and who is he?

La terra è lasciata in balìa del malfattore: egli vela il volto dei suoi giudici; se non lui, chi dunque sarà?

Now my days are swifter than a post: they flee away, they see no good.

I miei giorni passano più veloci d'un corriere, fuggono senza godere alcun bene,

They are passed away as the swift ships: as the eagle that hasteth to the prey.

volano come barche di giunchi, come aquila che piomba sulla preda.

If I say, I will forget my complaint, I will leave off my heaviness, and comfort myself:

Se dico: «Voglio dimenticare il mio gemito, cambiare il mio volto ed essere lieto»,

I am afraid of all my sorrows, I know that thou wilt not hold me innocent.

mi spavento per tutti i miei dolori; so bene che non mi dichiarerai innocente.

If I be wicked, why then labour I in vain?

Se sono colpevole, perché affaticarmi invano?

If I wash myself with snow water, and make my hands never so clean;

Anche se mi lavassi con la neve e pulissi con la soda le mie mani,

Yet shalt thou plunge me in the ditch, and mine own clothes shall abhor me.

allora tu mi tufferesti in un pantano e in orrore mi avrebbero le mie vesti.

For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together in judgment.

Poiché non è uomo come me, che io possa rispondergli: «Presentiamoci alla pari in giudizio».

Neither is there any daysman betwixt us, that might lay his hand upon us both.

Non c'è fra noi due un arbitro che ponga la mano su noi due.

Let him take his rod away from me, and let not his fear terrify me:

Allontani da me la sua verga sì che non mi spaventi il suo terrore:

Then would I speak, and not fear him; but it is not so with me.

allora io potrò parlare senza temerlo, perché così non sono in me stesso.
